The Editorial College at the journal Migration Politics seeks proposals from an editorial team that is willing to take on the management of the journal for a four-year term starting in December 2025. Migration Politics is a cutting-edge research journal, run by scholars, for scholars. We have pioneered commitments to non-corporate publishing, slow scholarship and open access. Since our foundation, our Senior Editorial Board, based at the University of Amsterdam, have demonstrated how researchers can make publishing more constructive, collective and impactful by minimizing the impact of for-profit publishing on the quality of academic endeavour.
The Senior Editorial Board’s main responsibility is to coordinate editorial work and meetings, manage the journal’s infrastructure, and uphold the journal’s unique commitments to its publishing principles:
- We promote ‘slow scholarship’ by offering prospective authors the opportunity to attend a residency program at the University of Amsterdam where they receive expert feedback and intensive guidance on their manuscript prior to submission.
- We promote ‘non-corporate publishing’ by organizing our editorial team in a collective fashion, distributing editorial responsibility across a broad editorial college, and achieving reputation through scholarly networks and publication impact rather than corporate metrics
- We have achieved ‘open access’ by working with the Sci-Post platform which provides Diamond open access to all our authors with no Article Processing fees.
After a stint of four years in which the Board has been composed of its founding members– Saskia Bonjour, Evelyn Ersanilli and Darshan Vigneswaran -, it is time to reconstitute this managing body.
We welcome proposals from teams wishing to take over the Senior Editorial Board while maintaining continuity with current strategy and proposing fresh ideas on how to achieve the journal’s core aims. The new team will assume responsibility for :
Upholding the journal’s founding principles and scholarly mandate and running the day-to-day work of the journal by:
- Soliciting manuscripts through open calls (such as the agenda setting and residency calls);
- Mentoring authors (organise slow scholarship);
- Coordinating the work of the Editorial College that solicits reviews and writes decisions;
- Managing relationships with the publishing infrastructure: Sci-Post;
- Publicizing the work of the journal through our website; and
- Securing funds to support journal activities
We welcome proposals from groups of 2-5 scholars, at least two of whom should be in possession of a PhD and hold secure university positions. The current team of Senior Editorial Fellows are all based at the University of Amsterdam which has proven helpful in our efforts to build the journal and secure funds for our team. However, we are open to proposals from teams whose members are based at different universities.
The Senior Editorial Board is keen to engage closely with applicants and will host an information session on 4 April 2025 for interested teams. Please contact us at migrationpolitics@uva.nl if you would like to attend.
Proposals should be submitted by April 30, 2025 to migrationpolitics@uva.nl and consist of a brief [2 page] letter that includes:
- A motivation statement outlining how the team plans to maintain or build on the journal’s intellectual agenda and achieve the journal’s principles of slow scholarship, open access and non-corporate publishing.
- A timeline for assumption of responsibilities, including a commitment to undertake a handover meeting with the current Senior Editorial Fellows in October 2025
- A budget, including clear statement of funds and their institutional origin.
Proposals will be assessed by the current Senior Editorial Board who may conduct interviews with candidate teams. The successful applicants will be asked to submit a more detailed proposal which clarifies how they plan to implement the plans and timelines described in their original letter.
